Monsoon Devastation: 19 Lives Lost in Nagaland and Jammu and Kashmir

Mon, Jul 20, 2026(46d ago)World

Severe monsoon weather has wreaked havoc across India this Sunday, leaving at least 19 people dead following a series of intense flash floods and landslides. The casualties were reported in two distinct regions: eight individuals lost their lives in the northeastern state of Nagaland, while 11 others perished in Jammu and Kashmir. Rescue efforts remain underway in Nagaland's Mon district to locate victims, while in the Rajouri district of Jammu, emergency responders and military personnel have successfully pulled 11 people, including several children, from the debris.

The situation remains critical, as officials have confirmed extensive damage to infrastructure and property in the affected areas. In response to the escalating danger and the India Meteorological Department’s warnings of further heavy rainfall, authorities have made the difficult decision to temporarily halt major religious pilgrimages, including the Amarnath Yatra and the trek to the Vaishno Devi shrine. These events, which attract massive crowds annually, will remain suspended until conditions stabilize and the travel routes are deemed safe for the public.
