Sibuyan Island: The Fight to Save Asia’s Galapagos

Tue, Jul 21, 2026(45d ago)World

Known as the "Galapagos of Asia," Sibuyan Island is a biodiversity hotspot boasting the world’s densest forest and a unique ecosystem that evolved in total isolation. Home to hundreds of endemic plant species and rare wildlife, such as the Sibuyan striped shrew and the Philippine hanging parrot, the island is now the site of intense civil unrest. Residents of San Fernando are currently staging loud protests against a recent municipal resolution that greenlit nickel and gold exploration by the Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC) at the base of the iconic Mount Guiting-Guiting. Despite local opposition and the steadfast resistance of Mayor Fernando Marin—a dedicated environmentalist—the project threatens to disrupt one of the few pristine landscapes left in the Philippines.

The conflict highlights a deeper divide between the government’s push for mineral extraction and the protection of fragile environments. While the Marcos administration continues to court foreign mining investment, critics point out that the mining sector contributes less than 1% to the nation’s GDP and employment. As the community continues to mobilize against APMC, which is linked to powerful political figures, the struggle for Sibuyan has become a symbol of resistance against industrial greed. Mayor Marin remains resolute in his stance, emphasizing that the welfare of the island's residents and its natural heritage must be prioritized over the short-term financial gains promised by mining operations.
