Delhi Court Permits Sonam Wangchuk’s Transfer to Private Hospital

Tue, Jul 21, 2026(45d ago)World

The Delhi High Court has granted activist Sonam Wangchuk permission to be moved from a government facility to a private hospital, following a legal petition filed by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo. Angmo, who had challenged his previous confinement as an "illegal detention," expressed her gratitude on social media, confirming that he would be transferred to Medanta hospital as requested.

The 59-year-old activist had been on a hunger strike since late June, supporting the youth-led "cockroach movement" which calls for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over recent medical entrance exam paper leaks. While police claimed his removal from the protest site last Saturday was a necessary medical intervention under court orders to safeguard his well-being, supporters and family maintain the move was a forced detention. This development follows a period of heightened tensions, including a recent protest march that prompted the government to open formal negotiations with activist representatives.
