Kuwait Escalates Diplomatic Response Following Tanker Attack and Infrastructure Strikes

Tue, Jul 21, 2026(5h ago)World

Tensions between Kuwait and Iran have reached a critical point after the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Totonchi to lodge a formal protest. This diplomatic move follows a violent incident in the Strait of Hormuz, where an Iranian assault on the Kuwaiti tanker Kaifan left multiple crew members injured. Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Al-Mashaan condemned the strike as a blatant violation of national sovereignty and a direct threat to international maritime freedom, asserting that the act contradicts UN Security Council Resolution 2817. Kuwait has warned that it holds Tehran fully accountable for these hostile actions and reserves the right to pursue all necessary measures to defend its territory.

Compounding the regional crisis, Kuwait’s critical infrastructure has faced sustained pressure, with power and water desalination plants suffering repeated attacks over the last four days. Recent strikes ignited several fires at power generation facilities, prompting an urgent response from the Kuwait Fire Force and security teams. Authorities have since managed to extinguish the blazes and are currently conducting damage assessments. As a precautionary step to safeguard the grid and prevent further equipment failure, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has temporarily taken several power units offline while repairs and safety protocols are underway.
