Tensions Escalate in Delhi as Rahul Gandhi Detained Amid Student Protests

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(45d ago)World

Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, were detained by police on Tuesday while leading a march toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi. The protest, which saw senior political figures like Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheeshan join in solidarity, was organized to demand accountability regarding a violent police crackdown on students. Rahul Gandhi publicly called for the Prime Minister’s resignation, accusing his administration of jeopardizing the future of India's youth and refusing to address the escalating education crisis through parliamentary debate.

The unrest, fueled by the online movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), follows massive demonstrations against widespread examination scandals that have severely damaged public confidence in the national testing system. While the government has defended its response—citing arrests made following recent paper leaks and promises of systemic reform—protesters remain unyielding. Despite the use of tear gas and batons by security forces, which left scores of both students and police injured, organizers have vowed to continue their agitation until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is removed from office, marking a significant challenge to the current government.
