NYC Mayor Addresses Netanyahu ICC Warrant

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(3h ago)World

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently clarified that his administration lacks the legal jurisdiction to enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a video statement, Mamdani asserted that while he personally believes Netanyahu should face trial for alleged war crimes committed during the conflict in Gaza, city officials have no authority to carry out such an international mandate. He further urged the federal government to intervene, arguing that Washington should cooperate with the ICC to facilitate an arrest should the Prime Minister visit New York.

The mayor’s public stance follows a broader, highly polarized debate regarding international justice and foreign policy. While the ICC maintains there are reasonable grounds to hold Netanyahu accountable for his actions following the October 7 attacks, the Israeli Prime Minister’s office has vehemently rejected these claims, labeling the court as illegitimate. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has explicitly opposed the possibility of an arrest, vowing that Netanyahu would remain shielded from detention during any potential future diplomatic visits to the United Nations General Assembly.
