Tensions Escalate in India as Student Protests Challenge Government Over Exam Integrity

Wed, Jul 22, 2026(47d ago)World

The capital of India has seen a massive surge in security, with an additional 20 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force deployed to Delhi as student-led demonstrations intensify. Organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) alongside various opposition groups, the movement is calling for systemic reforms to an education sector they claim is plagued by corruption. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has been at the forefront of the criticism, highlighting a history of 152 exam paper leaks over the last ten years without a single conviction. He has called for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and an official apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arguing that the current "rigged" system disproportionately harms millions of middle and lower-income families.

In response, the government has pushed back, with Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accusing the opposition of weaponizing student grievances for political theater rather than seeking genuine reform. Meanwhile, the legal system has stepped in to mediate the unrest; the Delhi High Court is currently reviewing petitions regarding the use of excessive police force against demonstrators, openly questioning the state's dismissive stance toward the protesters' legal challenges. As the situation remains volatile, government officials have initiated outreach with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike, in a bid to de-escalate the movement and restore order to the capital.
