Saudi Tanker Targeted in Red Sea Houthi Attack

Thu, Jul 23, 2026(46d ago)World

Tensions escalated in the Red Sea this week as Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched a military operation targeting two Saudi Arabian oil tankers. The Saudi state news agency, SPA, confirmed that one of these vessels, the Encelia, caught fire at its bow following an assault. While the attack caused significant concern, officials reported that all crew members remained safe and that immediate measures were taken to secure the ship and prevent any environmental damage. The Saudi General Transport Authority condemned the strike as a breach of international law.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the operation, asserting that the Encelia and a second tanker, the Layla, had violated a self-imposed naval blockade. The group stated they utilized a combination of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles to carry out the strikes. While maritime security reports and the UKMTO confirmed an incident involving a projectile striking a vessel in the area, the status of the second tanker, the Layla, remains unverified. This act of aggression has triggered wider instability in the region, with ship-tracking data indicating that several other vessels have already diverted their courses to avoid Saudi ports.
