The Devastating Toll of Venezuela’s Twin Earthquakes Reaches 5,398

Thu, Jul 23, 2026(1d ago)World

One month after a pair of powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, the official death toll has climbed to 5,398. The seismic events, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, left a trail of destruction across the northern coast, with the state of La Guaira suffering the most severe damage. While the number of reported injuries has stabilized at 16,740, the government has yet to release an official figure for those still missing. Meanwhile, international aid organizations remain concerned, suggesting that thousands of individuals may still be buried beneath the debris as search-and-rescue operations shift toward humanitarian assistance and long-term recovery.

In response to the displacement of roughly 23,000 residents, interim President Delcy Rodriguez has committed to a multi-year housing project, aiming to deliver 4,000 homes by the end of this year and 10,000 by 2027. To support these ambitious reconstruction plans, the International Monetary Fund has unlocked $346 million from the country's reserves, while the National Assembly has fast-tracked legislative reforms to streamline building efforts. As the nation begins the difficult process of rebuilding, citizens continue to face challenges, underscored by the fact that over 1,400 aftershocks have rattled the region since the initial catastrophe.
