Philippine VP Sara Duterte’s Impeachment Trial Pauses for Legislative Duties

Thu, Jul 23, 2026(1d ago)World

The impeachment proceedings against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte have entered a week-long recess, following the conclusion of the first of four impeachment articles. Presiding Senator-Judge Francis Escudero announced the break to accommodate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s upcoming State of the Nation Address and the subsequent opposition rebuttals. When the Senate reconvenes on July 29, the court will shift to a modified schedule, meeting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to ensure that regular legislative business, including the vital 2027 national budget, remains on track. Senate leaders have emphasized that the chamber cannot afford a total standstill, noting the significant public resources tied to these daily sessions.

Despite the pause, the trial’s momentum remains high, as Escudero praised the legal teams for efficiently wrapping up the initial article regarding alleged assassination threats in just nine days. Moving forward, the court is expected to dive into the second article, which centers on accusations of unexplained wealth and alleged discrepancies in Duterte's financial disclosures. As the prosecution pushes to introduce bank and tax records into evidence, the Vice President herself is expected to remain abroad for a multi-country trip. While her office maintains that the travel includes official engagements, her absence from the domestic political scene continues to fuel speculation about her potential defense strategy and the future of her 2028 presidential aspirations.
