Inside the Mountain: Iran’s Secret Nuclear Site and Rising US Tensions

Thu, Jul 23, 2026(1d ago)World

Amidst growing hostilities between Washington and Tehran, the mysterious underground facility known as Pickaxe Mountain has become a focal point of US scrutiny. Situated approximately 220 kilometers south of Tehran and just a short distance from the Natanz nuclear complex, the site is believed to be a fortified stronghold designed to house sensitive nuclear infrastructure. Construction began in 2020 after an explosion at the Natanz facility, leading Iranian officials to announce plans for a more resilient, mountain-based hall for developing advanced centrifuges. Satellite analysis from the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) suggests the complex is buried at least 100 meters deep, shielded by hardened tunnel entrances and a expansive security perimeter, making it a target of significant interest for international observers.

While former US President Donald Trump has signaled that the site is under close surveillance, uncertainty remains regarding its current status. Experts suggest the facility is not yet fully operational, though its design reflects Iran’s broader strategy of moving its most critical nuclear assets deep underground to protect them from aerial bombardment. Because the facility is buried so extensively, military analysts believe it would be exceptionally difficult for standard bunker-busting munitions to penetrate its core, potentially requiring ground intervention or highly specialized tactical sabotage. As Iran continues to develop its centrifuge capabilities, Pickaxe Mountain remains a critical piece of the puzzle in the ongoing standoff over the nation’s nuclear ambitions.
