Devastating Floods Claim 26 Lives in Assam Amid Extreme Weather Across India

Fri, Jul 24, 2026(15h ago)World

Incessant rainfall has triggered a humanitarian crisis in India’s northeastern state of Assam, where flood-related incidents have claimed at least 26 lives this week. According to state disaster management officials, the situation took a sharp turn for the worse on Tuesday, accounting for 21 of those deaths. The Brahmaputra River has breached danger levels in several regions, a recurring seasonal challenge that continues to devastate local communities and infrastructure.

Beyond the immediate tragedy in the northeast, extreme weather is disrupting connectivity and safety across the country. Major transit arteries, including the Jammu-Srinagar highway, have been rendered impassable due to persistent mudslides, while the Kedarnath pilgrimage has been partially suspended following dangerous rockfalls. With meteorologists forecasting continued thunderstorms and heavy precipitation across Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and the northern territories, authorities remain on high alert, warning residents of potential flash floods and further infrastructure instability.
