Indian Sailor Killed in Black Sea Vessel Attack

Sat, Jul 25, 2026(45d ago)World

The Indian government has confirmed the tragic death of one of its citizens following a targeted strike on the commercial vessel MV Omorfi. The incident, which occurred on July 18, involved a ship carrying three Indian crew members while it was navigating through the Black Sea, reportedly within Russian territorial waters. In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs strongly condemned the violence, highlighting the severe risks these hostile actions pose to innocent civilian mariners and the stability of global maritime trade.

This latest tragedy follows a broader pattern of insecurity in the region, prompting New Delhi to issue a security advisory for ships operating in the Black Sea that are either locally flagged or rely on Indian seafarers. This warning comes shortly after a separate Russian attack on a cargo ship departing from Ukraine resulted in the deaths of four other Indian nationals. In response, India has formally summoned the Russian ambassador to express its deep grievances. Given that India is one of the world's leading suppliers of maritime personnel, with over 320,000 active sailors, the safety of its workers remains a critical diplomatic priority.
