No Military Path Forward: Iran Calls for Yemen Diplomacy

Sun, Jul 26, 2026(2h ago)World

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has firmly stated that the intensifying conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels cannot be resolved through military intervention. In a recent interview, Araghchi emphasized that disputes involving Yemen and the critical Bab al-Mandab strait require a diplomatic approach rather than force. Echoing this sentiment, foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei reaffirmed Tehran’s willingness to act as a mediator to help restore regional stability and alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing the Yemeni people.

The push for dialogue follows a recent spike in hostilities that broke a largely peaceful lull, which had been maintained since a 2022 UN-backed truce. Tensions reignited this month after Houthi rebels announced a blockade targeting Saudi ports, further complicating global supply routes already pressured by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. While Saudi Arabia and the Houthis had initially agreed to a peace roadmap in late 2023, the process was derailed by the wider regional turmoil sparked by the conflict in Gaza. Now, Iranian officials are urging both parties to set aside the blockade tactics and return to the negotiating table to prevent further escalation.
