Pralhad Joshi: The New Face of India's Education Ministry

Sun, Jul 26, 2026(1h ago)World

The Indian political landscape witnessed a significant shift on June 25, 2026, following the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His departure came after weeks of intense, student-led protests in Delhi sparked by widespread NEET exam paper leaks and the tragic loss of numerous students to suicide. Stepping into this challenging role is BJP veteran Pralhad Joshi, who already manages the portfolios of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy. Upon his appointment, Joshi expressed his commitment to serving with humility and duty, acknowledging the immense pressure to restore public trust in the country’s academic infrastructure.

Joshi’s political journey began in Karnataka, rooted in his long-standing association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and his early activism in the Hubballi Idgah Maidan movement during the 1990s. Since winning his first Lok Sabha seat from Dharwad in 2004, he has maintained a consistent winning streak, gradually climbing the BJP ranks from state-level leadership to pivotal national cabinet positions. While he has largely avoided direct legal or corruption charges, his career has not been without controversy, particularly regarding his past stances on communal issues and his oversight of privatization efforts within the mining sector. As he takes the helm of the Ministry of Education, all eyes are on whether he can address the systemic failures and accountability demands brought to the forefront by the Gen-Z protest movement.
