UAE-based Filipinos Anxiously Monitor Weather Crisis in the Philippines

Mon, Aug 10, 2026(1h ago)World

The recent onslaught of severe weather, including torrential rains, flooding, and a tornado in the Philippines, has left the Filipino diaspora in the UAE in a state of constant anxiety. For many living thousands of miles away, the inability to physically reach their loved ones has turned every news report into a moment of panic. Residents in Dubai and Sharjah have spent the past few days glued to their phones, exchanging frantic messages and calls to confirm the safety of their families as provinces like Iloilo and Cagayan face the brunt of landslides, structural damage, and rising water levels.

The extreme weather, driven by an intensified southwest monsoon (habagat) interacting with a series of storms, has significantly impacted communities across Luzon and the western Philippines. With over 110,000 families displaced and thousands seeking refuge in evacuation centers, the situation remains dire. While many overseas workers have expressed relief that their relatives are currently safe despite reports of waterlogging and property damage, the emotional toll of witnessing such a disaster from afar remains heavy as recovery operations continue throughout the affected regions.
