Devastating Monsoon Floods Claim 13 Lives Across the Philippines

Mon, Aug 10, 2026(52m ago)World

The Philippines is facing a major humanitarian crisis as relentless monsoon rains, amplified by multiple tropical cyclones in the Western Pacific, have left at least 13 people dead and over 1.3 million residents reeling. Over the past ten days, massive downpours have triggered a series of fatal landslides, rockslides, and drowning incidents across ten different regions, including Metro Manila. Benguet Province has been hit particularly hard, accounting for the highest number of fatalities, while emergency crews continue search and rescue operations for the nine individuals still reported missing.

Beyond the tragic loss of life, the scale of destruction is extensive, with over 600 relief centers currently housing displaced families and hundreds of homes either partially or completely destroyed. The economic impact is equally staggering, with initial estimates placing infrastructure damage at over P1.12 billion and agricultural losses at P135.3 million. As weather agencies warn of potential overflow at the La Mesa Dam, authorities have suspended classes and government work across affected areas, urging residents near riverbanks to remain vigilant against the ongoing threat of flash floods.
