FIFA Needs Structural Reform, Not Just a Leadership Change

Thu, Aug 13, 2026(3h ago)World

The global governing body of football is currently mired in a deepening crisis of confidence, with FIFPRO Europe president David Terrier arguing that the organization’s fundamental governance model is broken. Rather than focusing solely on whether Gianni Infantino should remain in power, the debate must shift toward the dangerous concentration of authority within FIFA. Terrier highlights that the breakdown of trust between various confederations and the current leadership has created a volatile atmosphere, suggesting that the system is currently ill-equipped to police itself or maintain transparency.

According to Terrier, the current climate is reminiscent of the period leading up to the 2015 corruption scandal, warning that the sport is at a critical crossroads. He insists that mere leadership debates are insufficient; instead, FIFA requires comprehensive structural reforms to ensure that power is shared and that the president acts as a guarantor of the sport’s integrity rather than an unchecked authority. As pressure mounts on the organization to evolve, the message from the players' union is clear: without a genuine overhaul of how FIFA operates, the governing body risks repeating the same disastrous mistakes that have tarnished its reputation for years.
