Taiwan Simulates Chinese Attack with Nationwide Drills and Internet Throttling

Thu, Aug 13, 2026(2h ago)World

During Taiwan’s annual "Han Kuang" military exercise, millions of residents participated in a nationwide air raid drill designed to prepare the island for a potential Chinese invasion. At 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, sirens echoed across Taipei, forcing citizens into subway stations, shopping malls, and underground shelters while police directed traffic to a halt. For the first time, authorities intentionally throttled mobile internet speeds for 30 minutes, simulating the communications blackout that would likely accompany a real-world military conflict.

The exercise proved eye-opening for many, highlighting both the practical challenges of a digital blackout and the necessity of disaster preparedness. While some residents expressed temporary frustration over the inability to communicate with friends and colleagues, many acknowledged that the experience was a vital wake-up call for a population accustomed to peace. Beyond the public drills, the military also staged complex scenarios involving naval blockades and emergency medical evacuations, with hospital staff practicing how to transition critical care units into underground facilities to ensure survival during an attack.
