President Marcos Yet to Choose Successor for 2028

Fri, Aug 14, 2026(1h ago)World

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently clarified that while he intends to officially endorse a candidate for the 2028 presidential race, he has not yet selected a successor. Given that the Philippine Constitution limits him to a single term, Marcos emphasized that he is looking for an "exceptional" individual who possesses a deep understanding of economics, job creation, and food security. He noted that it is currently too early to make a formal decision, stressing that he has not yet held discussions with potential candidates.

The political landscape remains tense as the alliance between Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte has effectively collapsed. While the two leaders secured a landslide victory under the "UniTeam" banner in 2022, their partnership lasted only a year before public friction emerged over policy disagreements. Duterte, who is currently facing an impeachment trial in the Senate, declared her intention to run for the presidency as early as February. In response to the growing speculation, Marcos maintained that his focus remains on finding a "nation builder" who is genuinely committed to the country's progress and the welfare of its citizens.
