Devdutt Padikkal’s Maiden Test Century Puts India in Control

Sun, Aug 16, 2026(4h ago)World

Devdutt Padikkal seized a golden opportunity in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, slamming an elegant maiden century to anchor India to a commanding 288-2. Filling the void at the crucial number three spot after Sai Sudharsan was sidelined with a toe injury, the left-hander looked right at home, finishing the day unbeaten on 131. His partnership with KL Rahul, who contributed a composed 77 before retiring hurt with cramps, proved pivotal in keeping the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay throughout a dominant day for the visitors.

The innings began with a bit of drama when an early mix-up led to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out, but Padikkal quickly stabilized the ship with a display of fluid stroke-play. From lofting spinners over their heads to punishing loose deliveries, he looked remarkably comfortable at the crease. While Shubman Gill chipped in with a brief cameo before gifting his wicket to Prabath Jayasuriya, Rishabh Pant joined Padikkal late in the day to keep the momentum going. As India celebrates its 600th Test match, the team finds itself in an enviable position, well-placed to post a massive first-innings total on a pitch that has offered plenty of scoring opportunities.
