Omani authorities are currently conducting intensive inspections and environmental monitoring following an oil spill caused by a vessel running aground earlier this week. The Sultanate’s Food Safety and Quality Centre has deployed specialized technical teams to assess the damage along the Arabian Sea coastline. Their primary focus is to ensure the safety of the local food supply by rigorously testing fishery products and inspecting processing plants, fish markets, and landing sites to prevent any contaminated stock from reaching consumers.

The incident was triggered by the sinking of the oil tanker Caroline Bezengi near Al-Qibliyyah Island, which has put the region’s delicate marine ecosystem at significant risk. Environmental experts are particularly concerned about the spread of the oil slick, which could potentially stretch up to 40 kilometers along the coast and reach the southern shores of Masirah Island. In response, officials are working around the clock to track the movement of the spill, mitigate its impact on the natural habitat, and maintain strict oversight of all maritime activities in the affected areas.
