Qatar Refutes Claims of Detaining Iranian Pilots

Sun, Aug 16, 2026(3h ago)World

The Qatari government has formally rejected allegations that it is currently holding three Iranian pilots in captivity. Majed Al Ansari, a spokesperson for the Qatari foreign ministry, clarified that the incident in question dates back to March, when Iranian aircraft breached Qatari airspace. According to Doha, these jets failed to respond to repeated communication attempts, leading to defensive actions. Qatar maintains that search and rescue efforts were conducted, resulting in the recovery of one pilot’s remains, and they have reached out to Tehran to coordinate the handover of those findings, though Iran has reportedly not responded to the offer to review the operational details.

This denial comes in response to claims from Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, which quoted a military official asserting that three pilots—Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian—were captured alive after their Su-24 bombers were downed during a combat mission. The Iranian side has called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene, claiming the men have been held incommunicado for six months. However, Qatari officials expressed surprise at the timing of these allegations, labeling them misleading and suggesting that such rhetoric undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain regional stability following the collapse of recent peace initiatives.
