Shocking Discovery: Egyptian Authorities Shut Down Factory Producing Counterfeit Oreos With Charcoal

Sun, Aug 16, 2026(57m ago)World

In a disturbing case of food fraud, Egyptian authorities in the Qalyubia Governorate recently raided an unlicensed factory that was churning out counterfeit Oreo-style biscuits using hazardous ingredients. During the inspection in Kafr Shokr, officials uncovered appalling sanitary conditions, with finished products scattered across the floor. The raid resulted in the seizure of nearly 1.8 tonnes of questionable materials, including expired butter and glucose, alongside a barrel of black vegetable charcoal used as a cheap substitute for chocolate. Beyond the imitation cookies, the facility was also found to be producing ice cream with unverified, non-invoiced ingredients.

The discovery has sparked widespread outrage across Egypt, with citizens flooding social media to demand severe punishments for the business owners, including calls for long-term imprisonment. Local officials have responded by promising intensified inspection campaigns across all food establishments to ensure public safety. As the case moves toward formal legal proceedings, the perpetrators could face significant prison time and heavy fines under Egyptian anti-fraud laws, which aim to penalize those who prioritize profit over the health and lives of consumers.
