Metro Manila’s Delayed Class Suspensions Spark Public Outrage

Mon, Aug 17, 2026(1h ago)World

Heavy monsoon rains brought Metro Manila to a standstill this past Monday, leaving thousands of students, parents, and educators trapped in knee-deep floodwaters. Frustration reached a boiling point on social media as many city officials issued class suspension orders only after students and workers had already braved the commute. Critics, including stranded teachers and parents, argued that these reactive measures failed to account for the safety of those already on the road, turning what should have been a precautionary step into a logistical nightmare.

In light of the recurring chaos, the Second Congressional Commission on Education (SCCE) is calling for a complete overhaul of current suspension protocols, which many deem outdated and ill-suited for non-typhoon weather events like monsoon rains. Rather than relying on blanket city-wide announcements, the commission proposes empowering school principals to make localized decisions based on real-time conditions. As the region continues to grapple with extreme weather and frequent flooding, there is a growing consensus that the government must move toward a more data-driven, granular approach to ensure the safety of the academic community.
