Strong Earthquake Hits Off Indonesia’s Sumatra Coast
A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra island this past Tuesday. According to the country’s geophysics agency, the tremor originated at a depth of roughly 29 kilometers (18 miles). While the quake was significant, authorities are currently assessing the impact on the coastal regions nearby.
This latest seismic activity follows a much more devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that rocked the region just this past Saturday. That earlier disaster resulted in 53 confirmed deaths and left over 100 people injured. Fortunately, rescue teams have indicated that there are currently no reports of missing persons following the weekend's tragedy.
