Luigi Mangione's state murder trial postponed after federal guilty plea

Tue, Aug 18, 2026(4h ago)World

The murder trial for Luigi Mangione, the 28-year-old accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024, has been officially postponed. This decision follows Mangione’s recent admission of guilt regarding separate federal stalking charges. Following this development, his legal team petitioned New York Justice Gregory Carro to dismiss the state-level murder and weapons charges, citing New York's double jeopardy laws as grounds for avoiding multiple prosecutions for the same incident. Justice Carro has granted prosecutors until October 9 to respond to this motion, rescheduling Mangione’s next court appearance for December 10 and effectively delaying the trial that was originally slated for September.

The potential for dismissal remains uncertain, as legal experts point out that the state and federal charges involve distinct legal elements. While Mangione’s defense hopes to avoid consecutive prison sentences, federal prosecutors have already announced their intention to pursue a life sentence when he is officially sentenced on December 18. Meanwhile, the Manhattan District Attorney's office has signaled its readiness to challenge the motion to dismiss, suggesting that the state case will likely move forward unless the judge finds the double jeopardy argument compelling. If the state case proceeds, Mangione would face a penalty of 25 years to life if convicted of second-degree murder.
