Staff Admissions Bolster Impeachment Case Against VP Duterte

Wed, Aug 19, 2026(2h ago)World

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte is facing mounting legal pressure after her Special Disbursing Officer, Gina Acosta, admitted to handling irregular cash withdrawals totaling hundreds of millions of pesos. During a recent Senate impeachment hearing, Acosta testified that she and another staff member withdrew P125 million in cash, which was then handed over to Duterte’s security chief, Colonel Raymund Lachica, under direct orders from the Vice President. House prosecutor Terry Ridon argued that this testimony is a "smoking gun," suggesting that the direct involvement of the agency head establishes the necessary evidence to convict Duterte on charges of systematic misuse and misappropriation of confidential funds.

The trial proceedings have been marked by high drama, particularly when Acosta initially feigned confusion and claimed difficulty understanding the languages used in court. The act backfired after Senator Erwin Tulfo confronted her with past transcripts proving her fluency, leading to a sudden shift in her demeanor. While Duterte’s defense team continues to frame these actions as standard operating procedures, the prosecution remains focused on the discrepancies between the official liquidation reports and the accounts provided by whistleblowers. With 16 Senate votes required for removal, the political landscape remains tense, as the court must now weigh these revelations against the Vice President's remaining base of support in the upper chamber.
