From the Thar Desert to the Test Arena: The Meteoric Rise of Manav Suthar

Thu, Aug 20, 2026(45d ago)World

Manav Suthar’s ascent to the international stage is far more than just a collection of impressive statistics. The 24-year-old left-arm spinner, who recently stunned Sri Lanka with a 10-wicket haul in Galle, has quickly proven his mettle by claiming 17 wickets at an average of 11.35 in only two Test matches. While he is being tipped to follow the path of Indian spin legends like Anil Kumble and R Ashwin, his journey began far from the limelight of metropolitan cricket academies. Growing up in the unforgiving landscape of the Thar Desert in Sri Ganganagar, Suthar was guided by his father, a physical education teacher who instilled the discipline and hard work necessary to transition from school cricket to the Rajasthan state side.

Unlike many modern contemporaries who rise to fame through the high-octane environment of the IPL, Suthar honed his craft the traditional way, grinding out over 150 wickets in domestic first-class cricket. His style—characterized by flight, guile, and genuine turn—has drawn high praise from former greats like Maninder Singh, who lauded his rhythmic action and ability to perform on any surface. Though his future in the sport is still unfolding, Suthar has already demonstrated the temperament required for the rigors of Test cricket. Having emerged from humble beginnings, he remains a grounded athlete who seems poised to leave a lasting mark on the international game for years to come.
