Imran Khan Returned to Prison Following Brief Hospital Visit

Fri, Aug 21, 2026(3h ago)World

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been transported back to Adiala prison in Rawalpindi after spending a brief period at a medical facility in Islamabad. The 73-year-old leader was moved to the hospital early Friday morning to undergo a medical evaluation, a move that came directly in response to a directive issued by the Supreme Court earlier this week. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, confirmed the transfer back to his cell shortly after the check-up concluded.

Khan has remained in custody since August 2023, consistently maintaining that the legal challenges against him are nothing more than a targeted political campaign—a claim the sitting government continues to reject. While his legal team has raised urgent alarms regarding his declining health, specifically citing a noticeable loss of vision in his right eye, official state reports maintain that his condition does not necessitate specialized or immediate care. Despite these claims, the Supreme Court had previously ordered authorities to grant him access to a medical panel, including his own personal physician, as part of his hospital stay.
