Mass Evacuations Ordered as Wildfire Sweeps Toward Reno

Mon, Aug 24, 2026(1h ago)World

A massive wildfire, identified as the Hawk Fire, has triggered a widespread emergency in Reno, Nevada, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes. As of Sunday, approximately 42,000 people have been displaced, with another 45,000 on high alert and ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. The blaze, which has already scorched over 13,000 acres, is currently being investigated as human-caused, and officials have confirmed that three civilians and three emergency responders sustained injuries while battling the rapidly spreading flames.

Governor Joe Lombardo has officially declared a state of emergency for Washoe County, mobilizing National Guard helicopters and personnel to bolster firefighting and rescue efforts. The situation remains volatile as authorities warn that the “red flag conditions”—characterized by high temperatures, low humidity, and fierce winds—are expected to persist. While Reno-Tahoe International Airport continues to operate normally, residents are being urged to stay vigilant and strictly adhere to evacuation orders as crews struggle to contain the fire near the city’s residential outskirts.
