India Rejects Settlement Bids from Adani-Linked Offshore Funds

Mon, Aug 24, 2026(1h ago)World

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) recently denied settlement requests from at least three Mauritius-based investment funds connected to the Adani Group. These funds are currently under investigation following 2023 allegations by Hindenburg Research, which accused the conglomerate of misusing tax havens and violating public shareholding requirements. While the Adani Group has consistently refuted these claims and seen its stock prices stabilize since the initial selloff, the regulator remains focused on ensuring transparency regarding offshore ownership.

The rejection stems from a deadlock over settlement terms, specifically regarding monetary penalties and the disclosure of shareholder identities—a condition the funds were unwilling to meet. By choosing not to settle, these entities now face formal enforcement proceedings, which could lead to significant fines, the public disclosure of regulatory findings, or even the potential suspension of their operating licenses in India. This move signals a firm stance by Indian regulators to prioritize compliance and transparency in the wake of the high-profile governance scrutiny surrounding the group’s offshore investments.
