Indian National Fatally Shot in Brooklyn; Consulate Offers Support

Tue, Aug 25, 2026(2h ago)World

The Indian Consulate in New York has confirmed the tragic passing of Gurdeep Singh, an Indian national who was fatally wounded during a shooting in Brooklyn on August 23. Singh, a native of Punjab’s Kapurthala district, was reportedly working as a pizza delivery driver when he was shot in the chest near Crescent Street and Stanley Avenue. While the investigation remains ongoing, police are currently exploring various motives, including the possibility of a robbery or a road-rage incident. The consulate has expressed its deep condolences and is currently working closely with Singh’s family to provide necessary support, including assistance in repatriating his remains to India.

This heartbreaking incident adds to a troubling string of recent gun violence across the city, occurring just days after a 17-year-old was killed in a separate shooting in East New York. Despite these isolated tragedies, the New York Police Department recently reported that citywide shooting incidents have dropped to historic lows for the first seven months of the year. NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch noted that proactive efforts, including the seizure of over 3,000 illegal firearms, have contributed to a significant decline in violent crime, though the search for justice in the case of Mr. Singh continues.
