Tragedy Strikes Amravati Hospital as Fire Claims Lives of Three Newborns

Tue, Aug 25, 2026(2h ago)World

A devastating fire erupted early Monday morning in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, resulting in the tragic deaths of three infants. The blaze, which reportedly began around 3:30 am on the hospital's third floor, is suspected to have been sparked by a malfunctioning ventilator. Hospital staff acted quickly to initiate emergency protocols, successfully evacuating the majority of the 39 babies present in the unit, though six infants required transfer to a Super Speciality Hospital for continued medical care.

This heartbreaking event follows closely on the heels of a similar emergency at the Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh, where a faulty warmer filament ignited a fire just days prior. In that incident, staff were able to safely relocate 30 infants, although three children sustained injuries. These back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns regarding the safety standards and equipment maintenance within neonatal wards across the region, as officials continue to investigate the underlying causes of both disasters.
