Devastating Flash Floods and Landslides Claim Lives Along Nepal-Tibet Border

Thu, Aug 27, 2026(2h ago)World

Rescue teams are racing against time along the Nepal-Tibet border following a catastrophic disaster that has left at least 165 people dead and over a thousand others missing. Triggered by a massive glacial collapse that caused a debris-filled, tsunami-like surge, the floodwaters tore through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river valleys. Entire villages were flattened as walls of mud and rock engulfed buildings, swept away vehicles, and destroyed critical infrastructure. Among the missing are hundreds of foreign tourists, as the region serves as a popular transit corridor between Kathmandu and Lhasa.

The scale of the destruction is immense, with survivors describing harrowing scenes of homes being washed away and trucks being carried off by the relentless sludge. International aid agencies and local emergency crews, including nearly 800 workers in Tibet, are currently scouring the mud for survivors, though experts warn that the danger is far from over. There are significant concerns that blockages lodged upstream could trigger secondary floods, prompting authorities to urge residents in at-risk areas to evacuate immediately. While climate change continues to increase the risk of such glacial collapses, the current priority remains the desperate search for the hundreds still unaccounted for.
