Norway Mourns as King Harald V Passes Away at 89

Fri, Aug 28, 2026(4h ago)World

The Norwegian Royal Court officially announced the somber news on Friday that King Harald V has passed away at the age of 89. The monarch, who served as Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991 and held the title of Europe's oldest living king, died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet early that morning. His passing marks the end of an era for the nation, following a period of declining health that began earlier in August when he was admitted for treatment of a blood-borne bacterial infection.

In the hours leading up to his death, the royal family had maintained a bedside vigil, with the palace initially reporting that the King’s condition was "very serious." As news of his deteriorating health spread, citizens across the country gathered in silent tribute, with large crowds forming outside the Royal Palace in Oslo and throughout other major cities to pay their respects. The royal household confirmed that Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja had cleared their official schedules to remain by his side during his final moments, reflecting the profound national loss felt across Norway.
