Google Maps Sparks Controversy by Renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’

Mon, Aug 31, 2026(2h ago)World

In a move echoing the rising trade tensions between the United States and Canada, Google Maps has updated its interface for American users to display Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” This change, which follows a similar unilateral decision by the Trump administration to rename the Gulf of Mexico, aligns with the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). While the tech giant noted that Canadian users will continue to see the traditional name, the discrepancy highlights the deepening diplomatic friction between the two long-standing allies.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Canadian officials, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who dismissed the renaming as an “absolutely backwards” political gesture that feels more like a sketch from a comedy show than serious policy. Beyond the symbolic renaming, the trade war continues to escalate with reciprocal tariffs that threaten the integrated automotive industry shared by both nations. Ford warned that these protectionist policies serve as a de facto tax on American citizens and could ultimately devastate U.S. manufacturing, as Canada remains a primary market for American-made vehicles.
