Tragedy Off the Coast of Northern Cyprus: Search Operations Continue After Ferry Capsizes

Mon, Aug 31, 2026(1h ago)World

A desperate search operation is underway off the coast of Kyrenia after a ferry carrying 267 passengers capsized shortly after departure. At least eight people have been confirmed dead, while nearly 20 others remain unaccounted for. The vessel, which was en route to Tasucu, Turkey, reportedly suffered a violent jolt before overturning, leaving survivors to cling to the hull until coastguard teams and nearby ships could pull them to safety.

With the wreckage now resting in depths exceeding 500 meters, specialized dive teams from Turkey have joined the recovery efforts to locate those still missing. As families gather at the port in agonizing suspense, authorities have launched an investigation into the disaster, detaining the ship's captain and crew for questioning. The incident has cast a shadow over one of the region's most frequent sea shuttle routes, leaving many to mourn the victims while hoping for a miracle for those still lost at sea.
