Kerala Makes History as First Indian State to Launch Dedicated AI Ministry

Fri, May 22, 2026(45d ago)World

In a landmark development for governance in India, Kerala has officially become the first state to integrate a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) portfolio into its cabinet. Following the recent transition of power, the newly formed United Democratic Front (UDF) government announced a strategic reshuffle of ministerial responsibilities. Under this new structure, the AI department will be managed alongside Information Technology, Industries, and Commerce, signaling a forward-thinking approach to integrating emerging technologies into the state’s industrial and administrative framework.

Veteran leader PK Kunhalikutty has been tapped to helm this pioneering AI department, alongside his oversight of Industries, IT, and start-up sectors. This administrative shake-up follows the swearing-in of Chief Minister VD Satheesan, who officially took office this Monday, marking the end of a decade of Left Democratic Front governance. As the state administration shifts gears under new leadership, the establishment of a specialized ministry for AI underscores a clear commitment to digital innovation and economic modernization for Kerala’s future.
