Amazon Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Ad Auction Manipulation

Tue, Sep 1, 2026(2h ago)World

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, alongside 22 states, has launched a significant legal challenge against Amazon, alleging that the tech giant systematically manipulated its digital advertising auctions to overcharge businesses. According to the lawsuit filed in Washington state, these deceptive practices impacted approximately 1.2 million customers, resulting in an estimated $20 billion in unfair charges. Officials claim that starting in 2018, Amazon altered its auction mechanisms for services like Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands, intentionally concealing these changes to inflate costs without notifying its advertising partners.

In response, Amazon has dismissed the allegations as "flawed" and "misguided," arguing that regulators relied on cherry-picked, outdated internal documentation to build their case. This legal battle represents the third major federal complaint against the company in recent years, adding to ongoing tension surrounding Amazon’s market dominance. As the bipartisan crackdown on Big Tech continues under the current administration, this case joins a broader wave of antitrust actions targeting industry titans like Google, Apple, and Meta, signaling a sustained regulatory effort to curtail the influence of digital monopolies.
