India has officially experienced its warmest August since weather records began in 1901. According to data released by the India Meteorological Department, the country’s average temperature soared to 28.01°C, slightly surpassing the previous record of 28.0°C set just last year. This ongoing trend of rising temperatures highlights the growing climate challenges facing the nation, as the mean temperature for the month climbed 0.67°C above the established long-term average.

A primary driver behind this intense heat was a 16 percent deficit in monsoon rainfall, a shortfall largely attributed to the influence of El Niño. This global climate pattern, which disrupts standard wind and precipitation cycles, often leads to drier and hotter conditions across India and Southeast Asia. As climate change continues to intensify weather extremes and elevate baseline temperatures globally, experts remain concerned about the vulnerability of India’s massive population to increasingly dangerous and frequent heatwaves.
