Survival Amidst the Debris: A Witness Account of Nepal’s Deadly Floods

Thu, Sep 3, 2026(2h ago)World

Dhan Bahadur Tamang, a worker at the Upper Trishuli 1 hydropower project, narrowly escaped a catastrophic flood that decimated parts of Nepal and Tibet after a massive rock and ice avalanche. Tamang describes the harrowing moments inside the tunnel when the air pressure shifted, followed by a violent torrent of water that swept away everything in its path. For the survivors, the ordeal became a grueling fight for survival as they navigated through darkness, debris, and the bodies of the fallen before finally emerging into the light. With the death toll now climbing past 1,200 and thousands still missing, the humanitarian crisis remains dire as rescue teams continue to scour the wreckage for those trapped in flooded industrial tunnels and remote mountainous regions.

The search efforts are compounded by the immense difficulty of accessing devastated Himalayan communities, where destroyed roads have forced authorities to consider unconventional aid delivery methods like drones and porters. Families of the missing, including international travelers on spiritual quests near Mount Kailash, are enduring agonizing uncertainty while searching hospitals and morgues for their loved ones. In response to the tragedy, international aid has begun to flow, with the UAE dispatching relief missions, medical teams, and significant financial support to bolster the efforts of the Nepalese government and international agencies working on the ground to provide food, medicine, and search-and-rescue assistance.
