Sri Lankan authorities have taken lawmaker Namal Rajapaksa into custody as part of an ongoing corruption investigation into a massive $2.3 billion aircraft deal with Airbus. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption summoned the son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa for questioning on Friday, ultimately leading to his arrest. While specific charges have yet to be finalized, the case stems from a controversial 2013 purchase of 10 aircraft that was later scrapped by the government in 2016.

The investigation suggests that European manufacturer Airbus funneled millions of dollars in bribes to senior Sri Lankan officials to secure the deal. These allegations were further fueled by claims from the late former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, Kapila Chandrasena, who had previously alleged that he funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks to the younger Rajapaksa. Although the Rajapaksa family continues to maintain that these accusations are purely politically motivated, international investigations by authorities in the US, UK, and France have previously corroborated that bribes were paid during the tenure of the former president’s administration.
