Sri Lanka Targets UAE Growth Through Tourism and Investment

Sat, Sep 5, 2026(2h ago)World

Sri Lanka is aggressively positioning itself as a premier destination for both UAE travelers and investors, aiming to build on a solid existing trade relationship that currently stands at $1.7 billion. According to Arusha Cooray, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the UAE, the island nation is a perfect fit for Emirati tourists due to its geographical proximity—just a 4.5-hour flight away—and a diverse range of attractions. From the lush, temperate tea plantations and wildlife-rich national parks to its eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean" offers a compact yet varied travel experience that is increasingly accessible through simplified online visa processes and frequent direct flights.

Beyond the tourism sector, Sri Lanka is actively courting UAE business interest in fields such as logistics, IT, agriculture, and service industries. As the country continues to stabilize its economy following recent challenges, officials are emphasizing that inflation is being managed and that institutional reforms are firmly underway to create a more welcoming environment for foreign capital. With the UAE already serving as one of Sri Lanka’s top import and export partners, this push for deeper collaboration is designed to leverage the existing cultural and economic ties between the two nations, further strengthening a partnership that currently supports a massive community of over 350,000 Sri Lankans residing in the Emirates.
