India Immunologicals Clarifies Status of Abhayrab Rabies Vaccine

Sun, Sep 6, 2026(2h ago)World

Indian vaccine manufacturer India Immunologicals (IIL) has officially addressed concerns following reports that a batch of its Abhayrab rabies vaccine was flagged by national regulators as substandard. The company stepped in to provide clarity after medical professionals raised questions regarding batch number KE25012. According to IIL, the samples deemed "Not of Standard Quality" and misbranded were seized by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation from an unlicensed residential location in Delhi, rather than an authorized medical facility.

Upon investigation, IIL discovered seventeen distinct discrepancies between the seized vials and their own verified retention samples, leading them to conclude that the flagged products were counterfeit and not manufactured by their subsidiary, the Human Biologicals Institute. The company has moved to reassure the public, confirming that patients who received vaccinations through legitimate hospitals and pharmacies remain safe, as every authorized batch undergoes rigorous independent testing and certification. IIL is currently cooperating fully with authorities, sharing all relevant production and distribution records to assist in identifying the source of these illicit vials.
