Public Flogging of Murder Suspect in Gujarat Sparks Debate

Mon, Sep 7, 2026(2h ago)World

A disturbing incident in the Indian state of Gujarat has ignited a fierce national conversation after police were filmed publicly thrashing a man accused of murdering his partner. Faizal Lakhani was taken by officers to the crime scene in Bhavnagar for a reconstruction of the incident, during which he was restrained and repeatedly struck with bamboo batons. The footage, which shows the suspect being beaten in a public bus terminal, has since gone viral, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding extrajudicial punishments in India despite Supreme Court directives explicitly forbidding such practices.

Law enforcement officials have defended the harsh measures as a necessary deterrent against violence toward women. Officer D.P. Unadkat stated that the public display was intended to set an example and instill fear in potential offenders. However, the incident has drawn a polarized response from the public. While some social media users applauded the police for delivering immediate "justice," others have strongly condemned the officers, arguing that vigilante-style beatings undermine the legal system and violate the fundamental rights of a suspect who has yet to be convicted in a court of law.
