Manny Pacquiao’s Return to Public Service: Leading the Fight Against Poverty

Tue, Sep 8, 2026(2h ago)World

Boxing icon Manny “Manny” Pacquiao is officially heading back into the public sector, this time joining President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration. The eight-division world champion has been appointed to the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), an agency dedicated to coordinating social reform and poverty-alleviation efforts between government bodies and the private sector. Having previously served as a senator and running against Marcos in the 2022 presidential race, Pacquiao is expected to leverage his advisory role to help shape national policies and resource distribution strategies aimed at uplifting the country's most vulnerable citizens.

The appointment is widely viewed as a reflection of Pacquiao’s personal history, which serves as a powerful testament to overcoming hardship. Rising from a childhood spent selling goods on the streets of General Santos City to becoming one of the wealthiest athletes in history, the boxing legend has long maintained a reputation for grassroots philanthropy. Whether through building housing for the needy or distributing financial aid directly to families, his commitment to social work has been a hallmark of his career. While his specific initiatives as the new anti-poverty czar remain to be seen, many hope his unique perspective on extreme poverty will drive meaningful change in the Philippines.
