Authorities in Indonesia have officially charged a 37-year-old train driver following a tragic accident last April that claimed the lives of 16 women. The incident occurred near Bekasi Timur, just outside of Jakarta, when a long-distance train collided with the rear of a stationary commuter train. Investigators determined that the driver failed to apply the emergency brakes early enough to avoid the impact, leading to a devastating scene where rescuers spent hours cutting through mangled metal to reach the victims inside a designated women-only carriage.

While the driver currently faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted, police have noted that he is not currently under arrest.
