Philippines Deploys Largest Ship to Confront Chinese Research Vessel Near Batanes
In a firm show of sovereignty, the Philippine Coast Guard recently dispatched its largest vessel, the 97-meter BRP Teresa Magbanua, alongside an aircraft to intercept a Chinese research ship operating near the northern province of Batanes. The target, a Chinese-flagged survey vessel identified as the JIA HAI KE 7, had been lingering approximately 37 nautical miles off Itbayat Island since late September. Philippine officials confirmed that their maritime team successfully disrupted the unauthorized research activities by circling the ship and issuing persistent radio challenges, effectively forcing the vessel to vacate its loitering position.
The situation escalated briefly when a Chinese Coast Guard ship arrived on the scene, attempting to act as a shield for the survey vessel while issuing counter-challenges. Philippine authorities noted that the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard is particularly concerning, as it suggests a deeper state connection to what is supposedly a private survey ship. Given the vesselâs proximity to critical undersea cable corridors in the Luzon Strait, the Philippines continues to monitor the area closely to ensure the survey ship fully exits the nationâs exclusive economic zone.
