New York Attorney General to Lead Cornell Gang-Rape Investigation
Governor Kathy Hochul has officially appointed New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation into a 2024 gang-rape allegation involving a Cornell University student. This decision follows significant public scrutiny regarding how the Cornell Police Department and the Tompkins County District Attorney’s office initially handled the case. Governor Hochul expressed a lack of confidence in the local prosecutor’s ability to conduct an impartial review, particularly after new revelations surfaced suggesting that authorities had access to far more detailed information than what was originally presented to the grand jury.
The case centers on a civil lawsuit filed by the victim, who alleges that members of the Chi Phi fraternity drugged and assaulted her. While Tompkins County DA Matthew Van Houten has since reopened the case and attempted to bring it before a grand jury, the initial decision to decline charges—often cited as being hindered by state laws regarding intoxicated victims—sparked widespread outrage. As Attorney General James prepares to launch a new, thorough investigation, the national Chi Phi organization and Cornell University continue to face pressure to account for their internal disciplinary actions, while lawmakers weigh potential reforms to state sexual assault statutes to better protect victims in similar situations.
